LNC FACTS
What is an LNC?
A Legal Nurse Consultant is a licensed, registered nurse with
legal training that consults with attorneys, doctors, and/or
clients on medical matters. They lend their knowledge and
expertise to the legal system through reviewing medical records,
medical research, and by written and oral court testimony. This
could include reviewing relevant medical literature or medical
records, interviewing witnesses, and providing a professional
medical opinion.
How does the LNC benefit the Legal Community?
When an attorney takes on a medical-related lawsuit, the
attorney is confronted with enormous volumes of medical records
filled with esoteric terminology, inexplicable shorthand and
indecipherable handwriting. Yet his client's future depends on
the attorney understanding those records and using them to
support the case effectively. That's why a Certified Legal Nurse
Consultant's service is the healthiest thing that will ever
happen to an attorney's practice.
While the services of a legal nurse consultant can make a big
difference in a catastrophic case, many attorneys don't wait for
such cases to come along before employing the services of a
Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.
After an attorney orders the medical records in a case, the LNC
receives and tracks them, and keeps the attorney apprised of the
status. Because of their nursing experience, the LNC is
invaluable at simply gathering the necessary records and
documenting the injuries. The attorney does not have that
experience and could miss something important that the LNC would
notice.
What are the Employment Opportunities for LNCs?
Legal nurse consultants provide healthcare expertise for
insurance companies, utilization review firms, government
agencies, private corporations and hospitals, both as staff
members and consultants. The legal nurse consulting profession
allows nurses many options for establishing a satisfying and
profitable part-time or full-time career. Services provided
include assisting with discovery; conducting research; reviewing
medical records; identifying standards of care; preparing
reports and summaries on the extent of injury or illness; and
locating expert witnesses. Although most legal nurse consultants
work behind the scenes, they may also serve as expert witnesses.
The legal nurse consultant acts as a specialized member of the
litigation team whose professional contributions are often
critical to achieving a fair and just outcome for all parties.
